Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - It appears Rochester will see lower speed limits on most city streets, but the City Council also wants to give citizens and members of the council another chance to weigh in on the issue.

The Council voted this afternoon to approve a new ordinance giving the city engineer the authority to set the speed limits for city streets covered under a new state law allowing local governments to implement lower speed limits on eligible city streets. The plan presented to the city council would drop the speed limits to 20 miles per hour in most neighborhoods and 25 miles per hour on smaller collector streets.

The core of downtown Rochester would also see speed limits lowered to 20 miles per hour, while Second Street Southwest near St. Marys Hospital and some other highly traveled routes near the downtown would remain 30 miles per hour. Some of the city’s major arterial routes, which now often have speed limits of 40 to 45 miles per hour would see those limits reduced to 35 or 40 miles per hour.

The plan will be brought back to the City Council, possibly next month, or another public hearing and further discussion before the final reading and vote on the ordinance.
