Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester’s local sales tax has been on the books for nearly 40 years and it may be around a lot longer.

The City Council Monday was briefed on a proposal to seek voter and legislative approval for another extension that would raise more than $200-million to pay for projects including streets and housing.

The tax was initially adopted to pay for the city’s flood control project in the 1980’s. Voters approved an extension in 2013 and it is projected to end in 2024. City officials say the tax has generated annual collections of $12 - $13-million.

The council has to submit the request to the legislature by the end of the month.

It is expected to meet next Monday and act on one of three options. Option B is the most aggressive. It calls for spending $50-million on street projects, $50 million on housing-related initiatives, $40 million to maintain the flood control system and $65 million on a regional community or recreational complex.

Option C would have the council kick the can down the road and consider presenting it to the legislature next year.

The overall local tax is .75-percent. A third (.25%) is used to pay for DMC-related projects. The DMC portion is not part of the extension proposal.
