Pearl Jam Welcome Seattle Music Heroes From Soundgarden + Mudhoney at ‘Home Shows’
Pearl Jam kicked off their summer tour of U.S. baseball stadiums by playing two nights at Seattle's Safeco Field. The hometown shows, dubbed "The Home Shows" by the group with their other dates being "The Away Shows," featured some Seattle music royalty making guest turns and nods to some of their Seattle peers as well.
The first major Seattle reference came about midway into the set, with the band covering the Chris Cornell song "Missing," which was part of the Singles Poncier EP. The rare track made its live debut during the Seattle show and can be viewed in fan-shot footage above.
The next major Seattle tie came well into their first encore with the band performing "Kick Out the Jams," an MC5 classic, with Soundgarden's Kim Thayil stepping out to join in on guitar. Thayil has been part of the "MC50" tour supporting the veteran group's legacy, with Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron also making an appearance this summer. Thayil played while sporting a Chris Cornell t-shirt.
The guitarist would later return during the second and final encore, playing alongside fellow Seattle guests Mark Arm and Steve Turner from Mudhoney on jams of Iggy and the Stooges' "Search and Destroy" and The Dead Boys' "Sonic Reducer." Watch all of the Thayil, Arm and Turner guest turns in fan-shot video below.
Pearl Jam made the shows a charitable experience, with the first show on Wednesday reportedly netting over $1 million that will go to help the city's homeless problem. Friday's financial returns were not revealed.
