According to the criminal complaint, Cunningham was arrested at his apartment after investigators identified him as the person who allegedly stabbed another man with a "ninja knife" after the victim and the Cunningham got into an argument. Rochester Police learned of the stabbing when the staff at the St. Marys Hospital Emergency Department contacted police and were told the victim was undergoing emergency surgery.

The 28-year-old man told investigators he remembered calling an acquaintance and "then he became unconscious and woke up in the hospital." The criminal complaint says he described his physical condition as serious "and he had two surgeries to deal with the stab wound and resulting complications."
