I'm a fast talker. Too fast, sometimes. It doesn't really seem out of place here in Minnesota because I'm surrounded by other fast talkers. But, when you go on a trip down south, it's very noticeable. I get impatient with slow talkers. Just spit it out. Why are you dragging the words out so long? Get to the point, we've got stuff to do, right?

When I listen to an audio book, nine out of 10 times, I'll speed up the narration because it's so slow. I found myself wondering the other day if Minnesotans really do talk that much faster than the rest of the country. Also, why do we talk so fast? What's the reason?

Minnesota Fastest Talking State

Fortunately, the internet covers just about everything, so research was actually already done on this topic from Preply. They've named Minnesota the fastest-talking state in the United States.  The average speed among U.S. States is 5.09 syllables per second. In Minnesota, the average speech rate is 5.34 syllables per second.

How did they figure this out?

Audio was analyzed by call recordings (over 4 million of them) and YouTube videos in two different Nationwide studies to calculate how fast people were talking.  They then ranked the average speech rates of Americans from 114 cities and in all 50 states.

What's the slowest-talking state?

Louisiana was the slowest-talking state, with just 4.78 syllables per second. As you can guess, other southern states rounded out the top ten. South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, New Mexico, Arkansas, North Carolina, Texas, and Illinois were also in the slowest 10.

Fast talkers doesn't mean Minnesotans are talkative.

I guess there is something about talking fast and getting to the point, because Minnesota is also the second least talkative state, beat only by Iowa.
