Minnesota Included in Salmonella Outbreak
Undated (KROC AM News) -Three cases from Minnesota are among nearly 100 reported so far that are part of a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Carrau infections.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the 93 confirmed cases are all linked to the consumption of pre-cut melon supplied by Caito Foods of Indianapolis.
The company has issued a voluntary recall of its products that include fresh cut watermelon, fresh cut honeydew melon, fresh cut cantaloupe and fresh cut mixed fruit containing one of these melons. The CDC announcement says :
“The recalled pre-cut melons were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers. Caito Foods and SpartanNash Company supply to independent retailers, so it is important to look at the label description and brand information to identify the product. Do not eat recalled pre-cut melon products. If you cannot determine if pre-cut melon you purchased was produced by Caito Foods, don’t eat it and throw it away.
According to the Minnesota Health Department:
“Three Minnesota cases have been identified as part of this outbreak. Two cases are children who live in the same household, and one case is an adult. All three became ill in March. None were hospitalized and all have recovered. All three Minnesota cases reported eating pre-cut cantaloupe from one Trader Joe’s store. Overall, 93 cases of Salmonella Carrau infection have been identified in nine states – Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The investigation is ongoing and more cases may be detected.”
According to the CDC, the products were only distributed in Minnesota to Trader Joe's. The store sites were not listed. Caito says the recall involves cantaloupe slices in a 16 oz. container.
The recalled products were distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
