Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Mayo Clinic COVID-19 testing sites are now also performing tests for other respiratory illnesses, along with strep throat in children.

A news release says, with the arrival of winter, it is anticipated that increasing numbers of patients will be experiencing illnesses with symptoms similar to those caused by the new coronavirus. Under a new triage system that went into effect today, Mayo Clinic patients with COVID-19 symptoms are still instructed to call the Mayo Clinic COVID Nurse Line(507-293-9525) to determine if they meet the criteria for testing and what tests should be performed. Patients can also use the Mayo Clinic online Check Symptoms assessment tool that is available for use by adult patients living in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

If testing is deemed appropriate, the patient will be directed to the nearest testing facility for an appointment and the staff will collect specimens. If the patient is being tested for more than COVID, additional specimens will be collected at that time. The samples will then be sent to a Mayo Clinic lab for testing and the results should be available within 24 to 72 hours.
