David Lee seemed almost nonchalant as he appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Friday. The accusations against him, however, were bizarre.

The Bizarre Incident

The court heard that Mr. Lee had been seen walking near a lake in Sunderland on the 18th of August, 2022. As witnesses watched in shock and disbelief, he reportedly removed his penis from his pants and put it into the beak of a nearby seagull.

He Did WHAT!?

Prosecutors told the court that 39-year-old Lee “unreservedly did an act where he took a wild bird, forced it down, and placed his penis in its mouth, whereby causing unnecessary suffering to that animal.

Violating Wild Life Acts

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, as well as the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, both protect any and all species of gulls.

These pieces of legislation make it illegal to cause intentional or reckless damage or destruction to an active nest, as well as the intentional or reckless killing of any of the creatures. These crimes are criminal offenses and have a penalty fine of $5,000+ or a potential jail term.

Waiting For Trial

While Lee has been granted unconditional bail, his not-guilty plea will be tested when the date of his trial arrives. Until then, his future and the lives of these very well-protected birds remain uncertain.

Lee says that misguided people feeding the birds has led to the problem: "That’s the main problem. It’s the humans that are to blame, it’s not the seagull's fault."

“It’s quite a stupid act to feed them. They need to be aware it’s quite irresponsible. It’s fuelling the seagulls’ need to eat human food.”

He added: “It’s something we need to control. They just come down and snatch the food. It can be quite frightening…”
