Making a Simple Left or Right Turn Could Get You Pulled Over…Apparently

I found out that if you're driving and want to make a left or right turn, you better do it right or you're going to get pulled over.    So here I am, driving down the road minding my own business and I wanted to make a right hand turn. No problem. I was in the right lane and I had my turn signal on. I waited for a break in the traffic so I can execute my turn and there happened to be a cop behind me. I make my turn and continue on my way. Two blocks down the road, I needed to make a left hand turn. Following the law (I thought) I turned left. Then, just a few more blocks, I needed to make a right turn. I did the same as I and millions of other drivers do, I made the turn. It's then that cop turns his lights on. "What did I do!?!," I thought to myself.

Of course, whenever a cop is in sight, you try to become the greatest driver in the world, obeying the law and all. I wasn't speeding. I used my signals. I didn't whip out in front of anybody. I was wearing my seat belt. So, I'm thinking, "Maybe they're pulling me over to give me some money for wearing my seat belt." Or maybe a free ice cream cone for being a good driver. Who knows?!

As it turns out, whenever you make a turn, you must go to the closest lane to you. For example, if you're making a left hand turn, you must go into the left lane of the road you turn on. If you're making a right hand turn, you MUST go turn into the right lane. I had no idea that this was even a law but apparently it IS. I'm not sure why, but it is.

I would always turn and go into whichever lane I wanted to. I guess I never really paid attention. So, the next time you're driving and you want to make a turn, remember, ALWAYS turn into the same lane you came out of. Otherwise, you'll probably just get a warning...and no ice cream.
