It isn't abnormal for Minnesota to get smacked with an Arctic blast or two during the dead of winter.

Even though we expect it as a part of the bargain of living in a place without hurricanes, earthquakes, and poisonous creepy-crawlies, that doesn't necessarily mean it's always fun when wind chills sink to the levels they did over the last few days.

Places across Northern Minnesota saw wind chill levels sink to around -50 during the coldest parts of the last few days, promoting the National Weather Service to issue their first-ever extreme cold warning since the new type of weather alert was created.

While what we saw over the last few days isn't the coldest it has ever been in Minnesota, even the most seasoned Minnesotans would call it at least "mildly uncomfortable" at best.

The good news about the Minnesota weather rollercoaster is that it rarely keeps us on the same plane for too long, and another temperature swing is on the way. When? How long will it stick around? Let's explore.

When will Minnesota warm up next? How warm will it get?

As we do the slow thaw over the next handful of days, seeing temperatures into the teens above zero to wrap up the week and maybe some 20s above zero for the weekend, next week will see a relative heatwave hit the state.

If the current forecast holds true, by next Tuesday and Wednesday (January 28 and 29), temperatures across Minnesota are expected to rebound into the 30s, with some places in the southern half of the state possibly even seeing near 40 degrees!

Now, temperatures in the mid-30s is by no means "hot", but when you compare it to how things felt on Monday morning or this morning, that's a nearly 80-degree difference in how it feels to be outside when you compare it to the nearly -50 wind chills we saw.

So, relatively speaking, it will absolutely feel "tropical" outside! And while it won't be hot out, I guarantee there will be at least a few hearty Minnesotans who roll their car windows down or sport some shorts next week.

How long will the warmer weather stick around?

The Climate Prediction Center's outlook for the next two weeks shows a trend toward "above average" temperatures next week and into the first few days of February.

So yes, that means once we see things warm up next week, it is likely it won't get brutally cold for the rest of the month and to start February.

While it isn't likely it will stay as warm as it will be next Tuesday or Wednesday, temperatures are expected to stay in the upper 20s and low 30s to wrap up next week. A nice break from our brief, but brutal cold snap we just saw.
