For the first time in the history of Kasson-Mantorville High School, their cheerleading team qualified to represent their school and Southern Minnesota at nationals! But what if they can't raise the money they need to go?

Doesn't the School Cover the Costs?

Nope. According to an email received from the team, "The squad is not receiving any funding from the school so they started a GoFundMe to cover travel costs to the competition."

I don't remember an area school doing a GoFundMe for a national competition, so this may be a first in SE Minnesota. But being the first doesn't automatically translate into hitting their goal.

What Is The Goal?

K-M Cheerleading set its goal at $20,000. A lot of money, and it DOES cost a fortune to attend nationals.

I don't know how much they've raised outside the GoFundMe, but right now they've raised only $355 of the $20,000 goal. Can you help them out? Just click the link...even $5 would be awesome.

Don't Parents Just Know They Have to Pay If Their Kids Join the Team?

Sure. That's the way it's always been for a lot of clubs and teams. I advised a Key Club at Rochester John Marshall High School and the members had to come up with at least 1/3 of the money for conventions on their own, and often, all of it.

Sadly, that meant some kids who really deserved to go, couldn't go. Their parents couldn't afford that sort of luxury. The leadership opportunities and the fun/bonding they missed out on made my heartache.

Check out the cool story KIMT did on the team.

I'm not saying this just to get you to donate, I'm really not. I LOVE that K-M Cheerleaders are doing a GoFundMe for a bunch of reasons...but the last one I'll mention is this.

A lot of people say they support the kids in their community...and our community is SE Minnesota. Not just Kasson, not just Mantorville, not just Byron, or Austin, or Chatfield. It's all of us. This is a chance for us to put our $5 where our mouth is. If you have $5 to spare, please click the button below and donate.

As always, if you have a comment, complaint, or concern about something I wrote here, please let me know: james.rabe@townsquaremedia.com
