Minnesota City Ranked Among America’s Worst for Bed Bugs

If you’ve ever had to deal with bed bugs, you know they're not fun. And now, one Minnesota city has once again earned the itchy distinction of once again being among the most bed bug-infested places in the entire country.

Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but for this familiar city, it could also be the Land of 10,000 bed bug bites. That's because new numbers are in, and one city here in the North Star State has been included on the national list of cities with the most bed bugs in 2026.

Really. And, yes, bed bugs ARE a real thing. I used to think they were just part of that 'Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite!' saying my mom used to tell me as a kid when I was going to bed.

What Are Bed Bugs and Why Are They Back?

But, yeah, bed bugs are real. They were once virtually eradicated in the developed world years ago, but the Center for Invasive Species Research at the University of California - Davis says bed bugs (technically known as 'cimex lectularius,' 'cimex hemipterus,' and 'leptocimex boueti,' if you're being all scientific about it) started to reappear again in the 90s. These days, they're back, with infestations reported all over Europe and the U.S., including here in the Gopher State.

Pest control company, Orkin, says bed bugs are insects that come out of hiding at night to 'take blood meals from sleeping humans.' They're typically 3/16 inch long, are red to dark brown, and can spread easily by 'clinging to items such as luggage, purses, and other personal belongings.'

Which Minnesota City Made Orkin’s 2026 Bed Bug List?

Orkin just released their latest 2026 list of the worst cities for bed bugs, and one Minnesota city was included again this year. To compile the list, Orkin looked at residential and commercial data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from May 12, 2025, through May 12, 2026.

So, which city here in the Bold North made Orkin's Most Bed Bug list? That would be Minnesota's largest city, Minneapolis. After making its inaugural appearance on the list at number 47 two years ago, Minneapolis has moved up 7 spots to #40 last year. But this year, our lone entry on the list dropped 8 spots and is now ranked 40th out of the 50 most bed bug-infested cities in 2026.

The top of the list remained unchanged again this year, with Chicago taking the honors as the most bed bug-infested city in the U.S., followed by Los Angeles, Detroit, Cleveland, and Indianapolis. You can check out the entire list below:
