Minnesota Costco Shoppers: The Latest On Membership Fee Changes

Many people have asked me whether a Costco membership is worth it, and my response tends to vary depending on who I'm talking to. For those with families who purchase groceries a lot, I say yes, but for my single friends or couples without children, I tend to say no.

My family has a basic membership allowing us to purchase a wide range of items in bulk, ultimately leading to savings over time. However, I've found that bulk deals are only beneficial when there are enough people to consume the products. Otherwise, there's a risk of things going bad and having to be thrown out.

In Minnesota, we have thirteen Costco stores. Each of these stores provides exclusive perks and discounts to their members. The company CFO provided an update on membership fees earlier this week. Read his comments below.

How Much Does It Cost To Become A Costco Member?

Costco offers both personal and business membership options, each with unique benefits. For my basic membership, I pay $60. Executive membership costs $120.

Nerd Wallet explains that there are no free memberships, but "there are new-member promotions for certain groups of people. Teachers, college students, medical professionals, military personnel, government employees, and first responders."

Last year, talks of a membership hike started when it was reported that Costco generally ups its membership fees about every six years, and it had been that long since the last adjustment.

Is Costco Raising Its Membership Fee?

Nothing happened last year, but the company's CFO did provide an update on the cost of membership fees earlier this week.

Fox Business reported on the warehouse chain's second-quarter earnings call last month. On the call, CFO Richard Galanti told investors, "It’s when, not if, still."

He said the same thing last year. Costco's key metrics continue to move in the right direction so, at this time, there will be no price change for memberships.
