Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The man charged with a brutal assault on a Rochester community activist and volunteer has pleaded guilty.

Court documents indicate Rochester police responded to a halfway house on the Olmsted County campus in April following a report of an assault. Responding officers reported that an employee of the facility had been struck on the head with a metal tire pump and suffered a significant head injury.

The criminal complaint states that surveillance video shows 46-year-old Malik Johnson winding up and forcefully swinging the tire pump at the victim’s head while he was sitting defenseless. The assault left the victim with a skull fracture and a cerebral contusion that required both physical and occupational therapy with a traumatic brain injury team.

Johnson was charged with one count each of first, second, and third-degree assault. He entered a guilty plea Tuesday to the first-degree assault charge in exchange for the dismissal of the two other felony assault counts.

He is scheduled to be sentenced in October and remains in custody on $500,000 bail.

Johnson moved into the halfway house following his release from state prison, where he had just completed sentences for an assault on an Olmsted County detention deputy and an attack on a state prison correctional officer.

He was also the subject of a Community Notification issued by the Rochester Police Department earlier this year. That notice stated he is categorized as a Level 3 sexual offender and had been convicted of a felony criminal sexual conduct charge in 2016.
