Man Sentenced For 2021 Rochester Convenience Store Robbery

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man was recently sentenced to five years probation for robbing a local convenience store two years ago.

28-year-old Johnathon Barron Kohrt previously entered a guilty plea to a second-degree aggravated robbery charge. In addition to probation, he was also given a stayed 14-month prison sentence that he could be ordered to serve if he fails to meet his obligations under probation. Kohrt is also being required to pay $750 in restitution to the employee of the convenience store who was working at the time of the robbery and nearly $400 in restitution to the business.

Kohrt was arrested in October 2021 after he held up the Kwik Trip store on Bandel Road Northwest. A store employee told police that a man had brought some items to the counter and then made a gesture as if he had a gun. The store clerk handed over the cash from the register and the robber fled on foot.

The responding officers found Kohrt nearby and recovered all of the money taken in the robbery. The arrest report notes that he did not have a gun.

At the time of his arrest, police described Kohrt as a homeless person. The prosecution of the case was delayed after the psychological evaluation was conducted and he was ruled incompetent to face prosecution two months after his arrest.

Kohrt was then placed under civil commitment for treatment and it was determined that he was competent to face the charges in August of last year following another psychological evaluation.
