Minnesota State Park Sees Second Deadly Waterfall Accident
Silver Bay, MN (MinnesotaNow) - For the second time this summer, authorities in northern Minnesota are investigating a drowning death at a waterfall in a popular state park along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and other law enforcement and emergency personnel were called to Tettegouche State Park near Silver Bay around 11:30 a.m. Monday in response to a report that a man had jumped off the High Falls and had not resurfaced. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources deployed an underwater drone and located the victim at the base of the falls.
The Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 54-year-old Gregory Corniea of Edina. A news release on the deadly incident indicates he was visiting the park with his family when he jumped from the top of the waterfall and apparently struck his head on the rocks near the base of the falls.
Another drowning occurred at the same state park on July 4. In that incident, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office recovered the body of a Kansas man in about 32 feet of water at the base of Illgen Falls.
