Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Reports of catalytic converter thefts in Rochester continue to pile up and the latest losses are in the thousands of dollars.

As of Wednesday, police had received reports involving the theft of 13 of the auto emission devices since Monday. Some involved cars, others were stolen from trucks and all were in the northwest part of the city.

And thieves have also been busy outside the city.

The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of catalytic converters taken from six trucks at Merit Contracting, located near the intersection of N. Broadway and 48th St.

The loss was put at $14,000.

And the thieves in this case used Mother Nature to steal the devices.

The trucks were in a secure area that includes chain link fencing with barbed wire at the top. Investigators determined the thieves were able to get inside by climbing a large pile of snow that was next to the fence. It also appears they used sleds to move the devices.

The owner of Jeff’s Little Store along Marion Rd also reported a converter was missing from a U-Haul truck that was parked on his property.
