It's the end of an era.

Back on Friday, the company announced that AOL is planning to shut down its Instant Messenger product for good on December 15:

Anybody who had access to the internet back in the 90's most likely had an AIM account. In fact, I had all three instant messengers in college: Yahoo!, MSN and AOL. I didn't need all three, but I'll always remember signing up for AIM simply because I wanted to ask a girl out from my Creative Writing class (and no it didn't pan out).

And who could forget stressing over the perfect "away message"? Inspirational quotes, song lyrics... anything but 'brb' because that was too lame and lazy!

How it's stuck around until now is incredible if you think about it. With the three-headed monster of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, you would have thought AIM died years ago. And while AIM is going away, AOL says it's excited to continue "building the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products for users around the world."

So I guess the only thing left to say is "TTYL" instant messenger!
