Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Temperatures are expected to be in the teens when participants begin jumping into the cold water of Foster-Arend pond for Saturday’s Rochester Polar Plunge.

Wind chill temperatures will likely be below zero when the jumping begins around 1:30 PM.

As of Saturday morning, nearly 900 “plungers” had registered to take part in the 19th annual frigid event. Pledges and donations had risen to $260,000 as of 7:00 AM, surpassing the goal of $245,000. Last year’s event raised nearly $235,000 with 807 plungers taking part. Through 2019, the Rochester event had raised $2.7-million.

The Rochester Polar Plunge is the second largest in the state after the Minneapolis event.

The 29 Polar Plunge events held in the state raise funds for Special Olympics Minnesota, which offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round sports training and competition. Through Special Olympics’ athletic, health and leadership programs, people with intellectual disabilities transform themselves, their communities and the world.
