The groundbreaking date for the State Veterans Home in Preston has officially been scheduled.

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs made the announcement at a community information meeting Tuesday morning at the Preston Servicemen's Club. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Thursday, August 19th at 11 a.m.

MDVA Commissioner Larry Herke said the 54-unit home is expected to be completed by the spring of 2023 and then veterans will begin to fill the home roughly 6-months to one year later. The facility is expected to create roughly 100 jobs for the area.

The project for the nearly 60,000 square foot facility is still on budget at $35 million, with 65% of the funds coming from federal funding and the final 35% coming from state and private funding.

The State Veterans Home in Preston is one of three homes in the process of being built. The other two homes are being built in Bemidji and Montevideo. The addition of these three Veterans Homes will bring the state's total to eight. The other locations are Minneapolis, Hastings, Fergus Falls, Luverne, and Silver Bay.
