Full Closure Of I-94 Now Ready To Begin In Minnesota
Road construction season is in full swing in Minnesota, as is the case every year at this time. The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced it has nearly 180 road and bridge projects lined up this season, plus an additional 51 projects designed to improve airports, water ports, railroad crossings, and transit infrastructure.
The continuation of the I-94 Project is among the things MnDOT is working on, which involves doing maintenance and repair work on the following five bridges along I-94 in Minneapolis:
- I-94 bridge (Dartmouth Bridge) that spans the Mississippi River
- Riverside Ave. bridge over I-94
- I-94 over Cedar Ave.
- I-94 over the Light Rail Transit (Blue Line)
- I-94 over Hwy 55/Hiawatha Ave.
The $16 million project, which started late last year, is expected to be completed in October 2025, at which time the five bridges along I-94 will have a smoother and safer riding surface.

In the meantime, motorists in Minnesota need to be aware of traffic impacts, including a notable one set for this weekend.
Full Closure Of I-94 Set To Begin In Minneapolis
According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Interstate 94 between I-35W and Huron Boulevard in Minneapolis will be closed in both directions from Friday, June 13, to Monday, June 16.
Motorists traveling through that area this weekend can expect closures to begin Friday night. MnDOT says that beginning at 9 p.m. on June 13, all I-94 entrance and exit ramps between I-35W and Huron Boulevard will be closed.
Then at 10 p.m., both directions of I-94 from I-35W to Huron Boulevard will also close as crews shift traffic to continue bridge repair work along eastbound I-94.
Motorists should use the official detour route of I-35W, Hwy 36, I-35E, and I-94.
I-94 is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, June 16; however, it will be reduced to two lanes in each direction through mid-August.
Ramp Closures Will Remain In Place Through Mid-August
It's also worth noting that the following ramps will remain closed through mid-August:
- I-35W northbound to eastbound I-94
- South 6th Street to eastbound I-94
- Huron Boulevard to eastbound I-94
- Eastbound I-94 to Huron Boulevard
- Riverside Avenue to eastbound I-94
- Cedar Avenue to eastbound I-94
