Albert Lea, MN (KROC AM News) -  A Freeborn County man died Monday after the garbage truck he was driving crashed and caught fire.

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office says the Thompson Sanitation truck was driving in a rural area near the Iowa border around 8:00 a.m. when it left the road, hit a field approach and crashed into a ditch.

A witness called to report the crash and said the truck had caught fire and the driver was trapped. The caller went to a nearby farm to get a fire extinguisher.

Although the fire was put out, the driver of the truck died at the scene. He has been identified as 69-year-old Roger Thompson of Clarks Grove.
