Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester area is expecting a brief dose of winter weather at the start of the week.

The National Weather Service has posted a winter weather advisory from midnight tonight through 6 AM on Tuesday due to the same low-pressure center that produced the icy conditions on southern Minnesota highways on Saturday. Forecasters say the region will likely remain in a dry slot for much of the day on Sunday before light freezing precipitation redevelops tonight and then shifts to snow on Monday as temperatures slide during the day.

The snow is forecast to arrive in two waves, with 1 to 3 inches of accumulation along the I-90 corridor during the day and another 2 to 3 inches of snow Monday night. The overall predicted snowfall totals for Rochester and many areas in southeastern Minnesota are in the 3 to 6-inch range.

The storm system has delivered over 10 inches of snow to sections of northern Minnesota and no travel is currently advised for a portion of western and northwestern Minnesota. Conditions are even worse in the Dakotas. At last report, I-90 is closed west of Mitchell and both I-29 and 1-94 are closed to traffic in eastern North Dakota.

Forecasters are predicting improving weather on New Year’s Eve Day and the first day of the New Year is forecast to be sunny with a high in the mid-30s.
