Foo Fighters End Hiatus by Covering Tom Petty at MusiCares Person of the Year Benefit
After taking a little more than a year off, Foo Fighters are gearing up for a busy 2017, with a handful of festival shows already announced and a possible new album on the way. They ended their hiatus last night (Feb. 10) at the annual MusiCares Person of the Year Award ceremony, where they covered "Honey Bee," by the recipient of the award, Tom Petty.
You can watch the video below, which was captured by a fan. The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that, later in the evening, Gary Clark Jr. joined Foo Fighters to contribute lead guitar on "Breakdown," although video has yet to surface.
"Honey Bee" is a song Dave Grohl knows well, having performed it and "You Don't Know How It Feels" with Petty on Saturday Night Live in 1994. At the time, Petty and the Heartbreakers were in between drummers and Grohl was without a band after Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain took his own life. Petty had reportedly asked Grohl to become their permanent drummer, but he declined.
Prior to last night, Foo Fighters had only performed once since their world tour in support of Sonic Highways ended in late 2015. That evening was their annual benefit for local schools, where they interspersed their own songs while serving as the house band for Lisa Loeb, Paul Stanley, Sammy Hagar and Perry Farrell.
As of now, Foo Fighters have 10 more shows on their calendar for 2017, with nine of them taking place in Europe. The only U.S. days is on May 28 when they'll be closing out the BottleRock Festival in Napa, Calif. The headliner for the previous night will be Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
