Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - An investigation into a recent armed carjacking in Minneapolis has resulted in a federal charge against a Winona man.

Federal prosecutors say 27-year-old Dmarlo West was identified by Minneapolis as one of the two suspects in a carjacking on July 9th. When officers went to arrest him, West allegedly began reaching into his waistband area and officers had to struggle to remove his hand from the gun he was apparently trying to reach.

After he was subdued the arresting officers recovered a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol from West's waistband. Because he has a prior felony conviction, West is now charged in federal court with illegal possession of a firearm by a felon.

The U.S. Attorney for Minnesota says the investigation involved the work of the new Twin Cities Violent Crime Taskforce. The multi-agency and jurisdiction group was formed in response to the recent spike in violent crime in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and surrounding communities.
