I am 100% certain this email was a joke, but this Dear Rochester DJ email got me thinking...and then wondering...and then 'researching' (Googling) and now I know why there are 10 hot dogs in a pack but only 8 buns in a pack.

HOT DOGS AND BUNS

Because.

No, just kidding. Check this out.

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, back in the day, there were no hot-dog packages. You went to the butcher, you bought hot dogs in whatever quantity you wanted. "Gimme three dogs, Sam!" for example.

They didn't start packaging hot dogs until 1940, the manufacturers said, "Make it a ten pack, Eugene!" and the deal was set. Oscar Mayer was first on the scene with hot dogs in a pack and 10 dogs made just slightly over 1 pound, and since meat is sold by the pound, they did the same for the hot dogs.

How many hot dogs can you fit into a 1 pound pack? Sometimes that's ten (mostly for the smaller dogs), but many are now 8 in a pack, so large are they you get two less official dogs, but no less weight in dogs.

Meanwhile, buns came in packs of 8 because...

Sandwich rolls, or hot dog buns, most often come eight to the pack because the buns are baked in clusters of four in pans designed to hold eight rolls. While baking pans now come in configurations that allow baking 10 and even 12 at a time, the eight roll pan remains the most popular. (https://www.hot-dog.org/)

And that, Mr. Kramer, is why hot dogs come in packs of 10, and buns come in packs of 8.

Hot Dogs and the Story of Burger King's Hot Dog Flop

When one is writing a story about hot dogs, it is appropriate to include many pictures from the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. Did you know there is a National Hot Dog and Sausage Council? I didn't...until today. You know what I said when I found them?
