St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The majority of the population in the Twin Cities will be restricted by a curfew tonight because of the potential for violence in the aftermath of yesterday's officer-involved shooting in Brooklyn Center.

Governor Tim Walz this afternoon announced a curfew will be in effect in Hennepin, Ramsey, and Anoka Counties from 7 PM until 6 AM.  Dakota County later announced it would be implementing a temporary curfew for the same time period. Walz stressed the need to provide space for people to express their sorrow and anger but he also stated that those who would exploit the deaths of Daunte Wright and George Floyd for destruction and personal gain would be met by the largest police presence in Minnesota history and would be arrested and prosecuted.

Officials say more than 500 members of the Minnesota National Guard will be helping State Troopers, Sheriff's Deputies, and local Police Officers patrol and protect citizens and property from anyone trying to create chaos. The curfew and increased law enforcement deployments are being made in response to the violence that occurred in the Brooklyn Center last night following the death of Daunte Wright. He was shot by a police officer during a struggle that followed a traffic stop in the Minneapolis suburb. The Brooklyn Center Police Chief released a body camera video that appears to show the officer mistook her handgun for a Taser and described the fatal shooting as an accidental discharge.

The Minnesota Twins, Timberwolves, and Wild all had games scheduled today in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and all three pro sports franchises decided to postpone those events because of the current situation.
