Billie Joe Armstrong Calls for Impeachment, Says Trump ‘Sick and Unfit for Office’
In a move that should surprise no one, Billy Joe Armstrong has called on the public to support removing President Donald Trump from office. The Green Day frontman's ire was raised after the Commander in Chief's most recent threats against North Korea.
Yesterday, Trump tweeted, "North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the 'Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.' Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"
Thousands of appalled responses and retweets quickly blanketed social media, and Armstrong's was among them. "This isn’t funny. This is our president acting like a madman drunk on power THREATENING to kill innocent starving people by way of nuclear war," Armstrong wrote on Instagram, accompanying a screenshot of Trump's tweet. "The 25th amendment needs to be enforced. This man is sick and unfit for office. I don’t care if your liberal or conservative.. this has to stop. Please share #impeachtrump
The 25th amendment, which was ratified by the states following former President John F. Kennedy's assassination, provides procedures for replacing the president or vice president in the event of death, removal, resignation or incapacitation. Section 4, in particular, allows a majority of the Cabinet to vote for the president's removal if they deem him unfit to perform his duties.
Armstrong's plea is just par for the course, following his long history as a Trump critic. In September 2017, he appeared in Michael Moore's one-man stage show, The Terms of My Surrender, calling Trump "bats--- crazy," and likening him to former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. In June 2017 he penned an open letter to Trump, again on Instagram, regarding his intent for the U.S. to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. When Trump was elected in November 2016, Armstrong hoped for "something drastic" to happen to him.
