The Olmsted County Board in April approved a recommendation that allowed property owners to pay their first-half year taxes by July 15th without penalties and interest. That was a two-month extension of the required payment date.

The board was told the purpose of the recommendation  was to “provide relief to property owners that have been financially impacted by COVID-19.”

The County Board is now being asked to grant an extension of the date second-half property taxes are due one month to December 15th, without penalties and interest.

The County Board is scheduled to vote Tuesday on this resolution:

“ temporarily abate the penalty and interest fees for late property tax payments on all properties within the County due to the public health emergency that would otherwise be owed between May 15, 2020 and November 15, 2020, but not paid until December 15, 2020. Property owners who are financially able to make their property tax payments by the due dates between May 15, 2020 and November 15, 2020 deadlines are strongly encouraged to do so to help insure the County and other local governments will have access to the financial resources they need to serve the public during this public health emergency.”

As in the earlier delay, property owners with escrow accounts would not be eligible for the extension.

The County Board has been told “other local taxing jurisdictions are supportive of an extension of the property tax payment date.”
