Abandoned Minnesota Air Force Base Could be Yours for $800,000
There are all sorts of unique and stunning homes that we talk about but it's definitely not every day that we get to talk about an abandoned Air Force Base. That's exactly what's currently for sale up in northeast Minnesota, Finland, Minnesota to be exact on Lookout Mountain, which has pretty incredible views.
The plot is massive, 101.26 acres according to the listing on Red Pine Realty. This place could be an entire town on its own! It also has some pretty sweet views, trails, and some of the buildings from when it was an Air Force Base are still standing.
When Was the Air Force Base Used?
Of course, we want to know when this Air Force Base was last used. According to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, it's a "former Cold War Air Force radar station" that was "established in 1950 and used until 1980."
Why is the Base Now Being Sold?
If the base hasn't been used since 1980, why is it just now being listed on the market? The base was actually purchased by a Twin Cities family back in 1983. According to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press the family "planned to renovate the former air base homes to become an affordable housing development, and then sell lots at the top of Lookout Mountain for luxury vacation homes." Now that sounds like an awesome idea! Except they owned it for two decades, made a few improvements, and in the end, didn't do what they had planned.
Now the base is up for sale. The listing says that some of the structures are "potentially salvageable" and some of them have new roofs as well. There's already sewer/water, power, internet, sidewalks, and streets all set up. All that's needed now is someone to "bring their ideas, imagination and creativity to create something special."
