According to a new U.S. News & World Report ranking, Wisconsin has even more reasons to be jealous of Minnesota.

I browsed the aforementioned report (which used data from McKinsey & Company) yesterday and was pleasantly surprised at how often Minnesota beat Wisconsin as "the better state" in several categories.

U.S. News & World Report explained how the data was tallied, saying,

In addition to health care and education, the metrics take into account a state’s economy, the opportunity and quality of life it offers people, its roads, bridges, internet and other infrastructure, its public safety and the fiscal stability of state government.

More weight was accorded to some state measures than others, based on a survey of what matters most to people. Health care and education were weighted most heavily. Then came state economies, the opportunity states offer their citizens and infrastructure. Crime & corrections followed closely in weighting, followed by measures of government fiscal stability and people's quality of life.

Without further delay, here are five categories where Minnesota reigned supreme over Wisconsin - according to this report.

  1. Healthcare - Mayo, duh.
  2. Education
  3. Economy
  4. Crime & Corrections
  5. Quality of Life - This was a close call, but Minnesota comes in a #2, while Wisconsin is at #3.

Overall, Minnesota is ranked second best in the nation behind Iowa. Sorry, 'sconies - but you're 11th on the list.
