St Paul (KROC AM News) - Two more Democrats filed today as candidates for the August special election in southern Minnesota's First Congressional District.

George Kalberer and Sarah Brakebill-Hacke have joined fellow Democrat Richard Painter in the seeking to represent the district for the remainder of the late Congressman Jim Hagedorn's term in office. Today's candidate filings have created the need for a primary election to narrow the field of Democratic Party candidates for the August 9 special election.

A primary election was already needed on the Republican side of the ballot. Roger Ungemach today became the sixth Republican to file for the seat. The other Republican candidates are Kevin Kocina, Jeremy Munson, Brad Finstad, Ken Navitsky, and Bob Carney Jr.

There has also been a filing by Richard Reisdorf of the Legal Marijuana Now Party.

The candidate filing period runs through next Tuesday. The primary election will be held on May 24. Governor Tim Walz certified the special election shortly after Congressman Hagedorn lost his two-year battle with kidney cancer last month. His funeral was held last weekend in Truman.
