This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. While Dave Grohl recently revealed his “new best friend” was ’80s favorite Rick Astley, the pop star recently earned more friendship points by covering Foo Fighters at a recent show.

Astley broke out the Foo Fighters classic “Everlong” during his set at the We Are Manchester benefit concert. The show was the first official performance at the newly re-opened Manchester Arena after a terrorist attack took place at the venue back in May. You can watch a brief clip of footage of Astley’s performance of the song via a fan tweet from the show below.

Astley has incorporated “Everlong” into his sets occasionally since last December, but his recent pairing with Foo Fighters onstage has added a fresh perspective on the singer’s reason for covering it.

The seeds of the friendship were planted a few years back when Foo Fighters trolled the Westboro Baptist Church before one of their shows, loading into a flatbed truck and playing Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” as they rolled past the protest. Astley finally crossed paths with the group earlier this year at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan in which they did a live mash-up featuring Astley singing “Never Gonna Give You Up” over the chord structure of Nirvana‘s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” making for one intriguing performance.

While Astley is known for his pop leanings, he has shown a love for the rock side, even covering AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” during some of his recent shows.
