Kasson Police Department posted this warning to its Facebook page:

“Kasson Police Department has received information that a scammer has spoofed our phone number and called local residents telling them that they have warrants for their arrest.  The impersonators sometimes use the real names of local police officers and will try to get you to send money or gift cards.  A legitimate government agency will not call and request gift cards for payment.”

The Better Business Bureau has reported an increase in these types of scams with victims losing hundreds of millions of dollars over the last few years.

The BBB reminds people to be aware because these scammers can pretend to be anyone including police officers, government officials, businesses, and tech support companies.

“If you’re asked to make payment via gift card for whatever reason, you almost certainly are dealing with a scam,” said Michelle L. Corey, BBB St. Louis president, and CEO. “Gift cards don’t carry the same protections as credit or debit cards, so funds spent on gift cards are funds you cannot get back.”
