Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester City Council will be presented next week with a budget recommendation that calls for no increase in the city's tax levy.

The spending blueprint calls for a 17-percent or a nearly $98 million reduction in overall spending, which would put the city's overall 2021 budget at $476 million. The operating budget would be decreased by about $18.7 million, while capital improvement spending would be cut by about $79 million.

City Administrator Steve Rymer states, “I am pleased to share the recommended budget. This year has been and continues to be a difficult year for everyone. Achieving a zero percent increase in the 2021 property tax levy during a time of reduced Local Government Aid and the financial impacts of COVID-19, is a testament to the City’s commitment to our community. I thank Mayor Norton and City Council for their leadership during these difficult times.”

In addition to no increase in the property tax levy, the City Administrator's recommendations also call for no increase in parking ramp or transit rates. The Rochester Public Utilities Board is also working on a budget recommendation that calls for no electric or water rate increases in 2021.

The City Council will be holding a series of budget sessions this fall before voting in early December to adopt the city's 2021 budget.
