What's the history of Black Friday?

Turns out, there are a few different stories about how Black Friday actually got its start.

According to History.com, the term first popped up in the 1950s when Philadelphia police used it to describe the chaos that hit the city the day after Thanksgiving. Picture it: crowds of shoppers and tourists swarming downtown before the big Army-Navy football game, creating a frenzy that law enforcement dreaded every year.

By the ‘80s, though, a new (and way more retail-friendly) story took hold: after a year spent “in the red,” stores would finally go “into the black” on the day after Thanksgiving, thanks to shoppers unloading their wallets on holiday deals.

The first wave of official Black Friday deals drops online on Monday, November 11th, with in-store shopping beginning November 15th.
