The IRS says it still owes Minnesotans over $22 million dollars in tax refunds, but the clock is ticking for you to claim your money!

While the deadline to file your 2022 taxes is quickly approaching (it's Tuesday, April 18th this year) the IRS is still trying to make sure some Minnesotans get their refunds from several years ago.

And it's not a small amount of money that has yet to be claimed, either. According to a release from the IRS Wednesday, taxpayers across the U.S. have yet to claim over $1.5 billion dollars in refunds from the 2019 tax season.

Here in our neck of the woods, over $22 million dollars in unclaimed refunds from 2019 is available to taxpayers in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The IRS estimates that 23,200 Minnesotans could have money waiting for them, with the amount of the refund averaging around $848.

So why is all this extra refund money from four years ago still out there? The IRS explained:

'The 2019 tax returns came due during the pandemic in 2020, and many people may have overlooked or forgotten about these refunds, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in the release. 'We want taxpayers to claim these refunds, but time is running out. People face a July 17 deadline to file their returns to potentially claim a refund.'

Taxpayers usually have three years to file and claim their tax refunds. If you don't file within three years, any refund becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury. But the IRS said for 2019 tax returns, you have more time than usual to file to claim your refund.

Usually, the normal filing deadline to claim old refunds falls around the April tax deadline. But due to the pandemic, the three-year window for 2019 unfiled returns was postponed to July 17, 2023.

If you think you might be one of the 23,200 Minnesotans with a refund coming to you, the IRS said current and prior year tax forms (such as the tax year 2019) and instructions are available on the IRS Forms, Instructions & Publications page or by calling toll-free 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).
