No matter how many repellents or candles you use, they always seem to find a way to bother you, turning your nice evening outside into a frustrating battle against the bugs. However, a trick going viral on TikTok might contain the secret to bite-free summer nights.

People use a variety of methods to fight off mosquitoes. Most have tried spraying insect repellents on their skin and clothing, others use mosquito nets or screens to create a physical barrier, and many have tried mosquito traps and citronella candles to repel or capture them.

All of those work to some extent, but there’s a new thing to try this year to keep the pests at bay.

The mosquito-repelling trick has gone viral on TikTok – I was immediately skeptical when I saw it was coming from TikTok – but a ton of people are saying it actually works.

And it sounds really easy, so I’m going to give it a try. And if you’re like me, you already have everything you need to test out this method at your house.

The theory is that mosquitoes are repelled by the smell of burning coffee grounds. All you need is a small bowl of coffee grounds and a lighter. Hold the flame to the grounds until they start to smoke, and you should be mosquito-free.

Diana Cox from TheGardeningTalk.com says this trick works. She told MSN, “burning coffee grounds works by masking the scents that attract mosquitoes, making it more difficult for them to locate their targets.”
