The Minnesota City That Limits How Many Cars People Can Park at Home

I didn't know until today that there are places that limit the number of vehicles you're allowed to have at your home. I first learned that this is a new law in Arizona so I needed to know if Minnesota also had a law like this.

The Average Number of Cars Per Household in Minnesota

If you had to guess, how many cars do you think the average household in Minnesota has? If you guessed two, you'd be correct!

An average of two vehicles per household makes total sense to me, one for each parent. Sometimes once there's a kid who's able to drive there may be three cars. But taking into account the fact that kids don't live at home much longer after they get their license and the households that only have one car, two on average makes sense to me.

Does Minnesota Limit How Many Cars a Household Can Have?

I mentioned earlier that Arizona has a new law about limiting how many cars a household can have. But does Minnesota have something like this?

According to my research, we don't have a statewide law about the maximum number of vehicles. However, I did find that there's a city in Minnesota that does have a limit.

Minneapolis Limits How Many Cars You Can Have

The city of Minneapolis, I learned, has a limit on vehicles that you can have parked outside of your home.

If there are vehicles parked in a garage, no problem. But if there are vehicles parked outside of a garage on the driveway or in the street, each household is limited to two vehicles.

The exact wording is: "We do not allow more than two vehicles per dwelling unit to be parked outdoors on a property."

It sounds kind of crazy but think about it, Minneapolis is so compacted, it kind of makes sense. There's not much street parking in the residential areas to begin with. Then if you don't have a limit of vehicles, you've got a mess on your hands.

The city also notes that vehicles are not allowed to be parked in yards or on unpaved surfaces.
