Winona Police Identify Suspect in Early Morning Shooting
Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Winona man has been arrested in connection with an early morning shooting at an apartment adjacent to the Winona State University campus.
The Winona Police Department issued a statement late Thursday afternoon indicating 27-year-old Cole Robert Cameron has been jailed for suspicion of first-degree assault. He was arrested after Winona officers responded to the 300 block of West 10th Street in Winona around 4:20 AM after receiving reports of a gunshot.
A news release says, when the officers arrived at the location they found a 35-year-old Winona man suffering from a single gunshot wound to his chest. The victim was airlifted to Gundersen Health in La Crosse, where he is listed in critical condition.
Winona police say investigators spoke with several witnesses and learned that Cameron and the victim had been involved in a verbal altercation before the shooting occurred. It was also disclosed that, while executing a search warrant at the scene, investigators recovered a black handgun that is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.
