Police obtained a description of Haji-Mohamed and arrested him after he was spotted leaving a nearby apartment complex after the shooting. Haji-Mohamed told investigators he owned the vehicle that Ellis was found in. He said he was buying drugs from Ellis when Ellis ordered him out of the vehicle at gunpoint, according to the complaint.

Haji-Mohamed said he then shot at the vehicle as it was reversing. Officers investigating the shooting recovered a .40 caliber handgun in a vehicle parked at the nearby apartment complex belonging to one of Haji-Mohamed’s associates.

The medical examiner ruled Ellis’s death a homicide. Haji-Mohamed is also facing a first-degree murder charge in Clay County stemming from a 2021 murder in Moorhead.

Court records indicate he had posted $175,000 bail and was out on supervised release with an ankle monitor that had lost power. The Clay County Attorney said he’s never seen someone post that high of bail and said he’ll ask for Haji-Mohamed’s bail to be revoked

Bail for Haji-Mohamed’s alleged murder in Minneapolis has been set at $2 million.
