Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Anyone with a vehicle registered in Olmsted County will see an increase in the cost of renewing their license tabs next year.

The Olmsted County Board of Commissioners, meeting in a retreat yesterday, voted to increase the county's wheelage tax by $10. The wheelage tax has been set at $10 annually since it was first approved 12 years ago to help the county pay for road and bridge projects.

County Board Chair Mark Thein says County staff brought the proposal to the County Board in order to meet today's deadline to submit the increase to the state for approval. The plan to raise the wheelage tax to $20 represents the maximum allowed under state law.

Thein says the commissioners were told the increase would provide the county with an additional $1.4 million in revenue for transportation needs. They were also told that five other counties in southeastern Minnesota — Dodge, Fillmore, Goodhue, Houston, and Wabasha — are already collecting a $20 annual wheelage tax.
