A news release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Minnesota on Wednesday announced the indictment. The educator made his first court appearance last week.
The news release identifies the defendant as 54-year-old Daniel John Janke. Federal court documents allege the Mankato man used a messaging app called Kik to send and receive suspected child pornography.
Janke is accused of possessing and distributing the alleged child sexual abuse material from October of 2023 through January of 2024.
The news release summarizing the federal indictment says the material was in the form of images and videos, but does not say how many files depicting child sex abuse were found.
Federal prosecutors also did not publicly disclose the Minnesota school district and grade level Janke teaches at.
Janke is charged with one count of dissemination of child pornography and three counts of possession of child pornography. He made his first appearance in federal court in Minneapolis on August 29 and was ordered to remain in custody.
The indictment is the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI, the news release says. Janke’s next court date has not been announced.
