Minnesota Man Sentenced For Mailing Drugs to State Prisons
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News)- A St. Paul man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for attempting to mail drugs into several state prisons.
U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger announced Monday that 40-year-old Walter Disney Davis was also sentenced to five years of supervised release after being convicted of distribution of drug analogue, possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and illegally possessing a firearm as a felon. The conviction was the result of a multi-agency investigation that began in March 2021.
Court documents say the investigation started when the Minnesota Department of Corrections was made aware of six letters on paper laced with a synthetic cannabinoid substance being sent to state prisons in Stillwater, Oak Park Heights, Faribault and Rush City. The letters were intercepted before they could get to inmates at the correctional facilities.
Investigators traced the letters back to Davis and obtained warrants to search his primary residence in Eagan and an apartment in Maplewood. Those searches netted over 400 grams of fentanyl, $3,000 in cash, digital scales, a spray bottle containing the synthetic cannabinoid, a loaded .38 caliber firearm and a loaded .357 revolver.
Court records indicate Davis is a convicted felon which prohibits him from possessing a firearm. Davis was sentenced on Friday after pleading guilty to all counts on the third day of a trail in June.
