Minnesota Man Guilty of Killing 5 Women During Chase
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Minnesota man has been convicted for killing five women in a crash that occurred while he was attempting to flee from a State Trooper.
The Hennepin County Attorney's Office says 29-year-old Derrick John Thompson was found guilty of five counts of third-degree murder and 10 counts of criminal vehicular homicide. The charges stem from the deaths of Sabiriin Mohamoud Ali, Siham Ada Odhowa, Sahra Liban Gesaade, Sagal Burhaan Hersi, and Salma Mohamed Abdikadir. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 20 years old.

Court records indicate that the Brooklyn Park man sped through a red light in Minneapolis and smashed into another vehicle on the night of June 16, 2023. The criminal complaint stated that the deadly collision occurred just moments after Thompson passed a State Trooper on I-35 going around 95 mph just before he exited the freeway onto Lake Street seconds before the crash.
Hennepin County prosecutors say Thompson was previously convicted for a hit and run in California in 2018 that resulted in serious injuries.
He was earlier convicted of federal charges connected to the deadly crash. Last October, a federal jury found him guilty of possessing with intent to distribute fentanyl, possession of a firearm as a felon, and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime.
Federal prosecutors say a search of the vehicle he was driving led to the discovery of a loaded pistol with an extended magazine and three baggies containing more than 2000 fentanyl pills. Investigators also found 14 grams of fentanyl powder and 35 grams of cocaine.
Thompson is the son of former State Representative John Thompson.
