Hibbing, MN (KROC-AM News)- A campfire explosion is being blamed for injuring multiple people in northeastern Minnesota Friday night.

That’s according to a news release issued Saturday morning by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. The incident resulted in injuries to eight people. 

First responders were dispatched to the report of three people suffering severe burns caused by a fire explosion at a rural address about 20 miles northeast of Hibbing around 8:20 p.m.

The injured victims range in age from 14-60, authorities say. A 53-year-old Hibbing man burned by the explosion died from his injuries. 

A 14-year-old was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital for further care, a news release says. The other victims were taken to hospitals by ambulance and private vehicles.

Authorities say the preliminary investigation indicates a group of families and friends had gathered to celebrate the Labor Day Weekend and had started a campfire. 

An unknown flammable liquid was used to start the fire and the liquid fueled the explosion, the news release says.

The names of the deceased person and injured individuals have not been released.
