
Former Olmsted County Sheriff Charles “Chuck” R. VonWald Dies at Age 96

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A former Olmsted County Sheriff has died.

An obituary published by Macken Funeral Home and Cremation Service says Charles “Chuck” R. VonWald died of natural causes on Thursday at the age of 96.
VonWald was born in western Wisconsin before moving to southeastern Minnesota. In 1958 he joined the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office and served in multiple roles and capacities before being elected Sheriff in 1970.

VonWald would go on to serve as Sheriff for 20 years until retiring from the role in 1991.
During his tenure at Olmsted County Sheriff, VonWald served as President for both the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association President, and National Sheriff’s Association.
Also while serving as Sheriff, VonWald and his late wife Bette established VonWald Youth Center, to serve the youth of Olmsted County. The shelter remains in operation today.
VonWald is survived by his three children: Bill, Judy, and Rita, as well as 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
“He will be remembered for his generosity and warm laughter, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him,” the obituary says.
VonWald’s family is requesting memorial gifts be directed towards the VonWald Youth Shelter – 180 Degrees or the Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation of Southeast Minnesota.
A visitation for the former Olmsted County Sheriff is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 5:30 p.m.
