Arrest Warrant For Minnesota Shooting Suspect After Court No Show
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - An arrest warrant was issued today for a Rochester man who failed to show up for a recent court hearing involving charges stemming from a shooting and attempted robbery.
21-year-old Demonte Latrell Simmons is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, attempted first-degree robbery, and a gross misdemeanor count of possession of a firearm without a permit. He was released from custody without bail after he was formally charged in the case in July 2022.
Simmons and another man are accused of attempting to rob a man and woman while they were in a vehicle parked in the 400 block of 11th Street SE around 11 PM on May 2, 2022. According to the criminal complaint, the victim told Rochester police they had gone to that location to meet with someone for the purpose of selling them a small amount of marijuana.
The court document alleges the shooting occurred when the victim began to drive away after one of the robbers broke out a window in his vehicle. One of the bullets struck the ankle of the man as he was driving the pickup truck. Police also observed three bullet holes on the exterior of the truck and located six spent shell casings in the area.
The charges state that Rochester police investigating the incident executed search warrants at two residences on July 1, 2022. At one of the locations, multiple people fled from the residence when officers were about to move in. The criminal complaint says one of the individuals was apprehended nearby and was identified as Simmons.
The court document says investigators backtracked his movements and located a cell phone, a loaded handgun magazine, and a loaded handgun with an extended magazine and a green laser attachment that matched the victim’s description of the weapon used in the attempted robbery. It also says the victim identified Simmons as the person who was armed with the gun during the incident.
