Halloween is right around the corner. I know it doesn't really feel like it here in Minnesota with this super warm fall we've had. It's time to start looking for deals on Halloween candy and treats for those trick-or-treaters. We've also been busy putting together a Taylor Swift costume for our daughter.

Before you know it, we'll be carving pumpkins to sit out on our front step to show people that we are celebrating Halloween and to come knocking on our door.

This year, I'm going to do something I wish I had done last year. I'm putting a teal pumpkin out on my front steps.

What does a teal pumpkin stand for?

The Teal Pumpkin Project was started because so many kids have food allergies. According to Food Allergy Research & Education, 1 in 3 kids have some type of food allergy.

Placing a teal pumpkin outside your house lets kids with food allergies know that you have some non-food treats available. Kids with food allergies can still participate in the fun of trick-or-treating.

Last year I had a child trick or treating at my home with his siblings. His mother asked if we had anything non-candy. I had to scramble. I ran into the junk drawer and found a dollar bill and gave that to the kid. This time I'll be more prepared.

Non-food treat ideas

The Teal Pumpkin Project has some suggestions for non-food treats. Erasers, pencils, pens, crayons, coins, stickers, fidget toys, bubbles, whistles, glow sticks, and more. Read the complete list from their website, or get creative and come up with something on your own.

This Halloween, make sure every kid can experience the fun and don't end up feeling left out.
