ROCHESTER, MN (MinnesotaNow) — The Minnesota Department of Transportation and Olmsted County are set to construct a new roundabout in north Rochester.

This project aims to address the persistent safety concerns at this busy intersection, which sees two highway-speed roadways intersect.

The new traffic circle will be located at the intersection of Hwy 63 (75th St NW) and Olmsted Co. Rd. 112 (18th Ave NW).

Currently, stop signs control traffic on County Road 112, often leading to driver impatience due to limited gaps in traffic.

This has resulted in a history of crashes, highlighting the need for a safer, more efficient solution.

The new roundabout is expected to significantly mitigate dangerous driving behavior by improving traffic flow and reducing speeds.

 Community Feedback

During a public meeting held on Sept. 12, 2023, and through subsequent surveys, local residents expressed strong support for the project.

More than half of the respondents believe the new roundabout will resolve safety concerns at the intersection.

Over 85% of those surveyed also feel confident in their ability to navigate roundabouts.

However, some community members remain hesitant, preferring a four-way stop or traffic lights, MnDOT says.

Benefits of the Roundabout

Roundabouts have proven effective in reducing the risk of serious and fatal crashes. Studies show an 86% decrease in fatal crashes and an 83% decrease in life-altering injury crashes at roundabout intersections.

By slowing traffic and eliminating the need for left turns, roundabouts allow drivers to navigate intersections more safely and with less delay.

In addition to improving safety, the roundabout is designed to handle high traffic volumes more efficiently than traditional stop signs or signals.

Entry curves will help slow vehicles as they approach the roundabout, making it easier for all road users to enter and exit the area.

Upcoming Public Meeting

For those interested in learning more about the roundabout project, a public information meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Cascade Township Hall, located at 2025 75th St. NE, Rochester, MN.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and gain insight into what to expect during construction, which is slated to begin in 2025.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, detailed information will be available on the MnDOT project website, where you can also sign up for email updates to stay informed throughout the project.
